Review: Farming Simulator 2011

August 7, 2011

I’ve had a fair bit of time playing this game, and it’s…uh…realistic. Like, really realistic. Honestly, It’s kind of hard to explain, like most storyless sandboxes are. You essentially play as a farmer somewhere in Europe (I assume; It’s never made clear where all this happens), and you grow crops to earn money to get better equipment to grow more crops to earn more money and it’s just a self-perpetuating cycle where you can play the game forever and damn is it ever addictive.

Do you want to know how long I spent playing this last night? I spent two and a half hours. I rarely play anything that long at a clip, but this game managed to hold my attention. I’m really not sure why. I mean, it’s not a complicated game. Cultivate, plant, harvest, repeat. It’s weird how some of the simplest games can be the most engaging, like how you can spend hundreds of dollars on consoles and games, and get completely distracted trying to master a free flash game.

Yeah, the game’s good, but it’s not great. There are some glitches, like after the 2.2 patch how the music plays constantly, or that the textures are kind of messed up on the mill, but they don’t affect the game all that much. All in all, it’s a solid game with a few inconsequential down sides. If games like Harvest Moon or SimFarm appeal to you, then this on probably will too, despite being a lot less stylized.
